Speaking in front of a full house at Portland Art Museum\u2019s Whitsell Auditorium, Deverell spoke to how Kew, one of the largest and most acclaimed gardens in the world, has transformed itself since he was hired as Director in 2012 in light of a changing planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the climate crisis accelerates into dangerous new territory, Deverell discussed how its consequences imperils flora and fauna. \u201cUnfortunately, we live in an age of extinction,\u201d Deverell warned. \u201cSome people think that\u2019s melodramatic language, but the scientists don\u2019t. The evidence supports this assertion. One in five species faces extinction.\u201d Keeping in mind this looming specter, Deverell spoke to his organization\u2019s mission of using science to protect biodiversity, inspire current and future generations to protect the natural world, and make previously complex and highly technical information more engaging and relevant to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-opt-id=481691912  fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2400\" height=\"786\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmedia.japanesegarden.org\/w:auto\/h:auto\/q:mauto\/https:\/\/japanesegarden.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/kew-pjg-2022-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28364\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Richard Deverell speaking about his organization, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew in London in front of an audience at Portland Art Museum. Photo by Jonathan Ley.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew has approached the problem of a warming planet with a variety of solutions. This has included tracking plant life and banking seeds of wild vegetation to preserve biodiversity and improving their centuries-old property to lessen its environmental footprint. Kew has also built spaces that incorporate both nature and art to educate and motivate visitors into greater planetary consciousness including <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kew.org\/kew-gardens\/whats-in-the-gardens\/the-agius-evolution-garden\">an \u201cevolution\u201d garden that explains how plants are genetically related<\/a> and immersive new <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kew.org\/kew-gardens\/whats-in-the-gardens\/the-hive\">art installations like The Hive, which recreates life inside a beehive<\/a>. \u201cI believe that art can be an incredibly powerful way of communicating messages,\u201d Deverell shared. \u201cYou can appeal to heart as well as head. You can reach different sorts of audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-opt-id=742466465  fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1366\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmedia.japanesegarden.org\/w:auto\/h:auto\/q:mauto\/https:\/\/japanesegarden.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Jeff-Eden-_-RBG-Kew-002.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26774\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Photo by Jeff Eden.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Noting that Kew is funded, in part, by the British government, Deverell shared that the organization has a moral obligation to become more accessible and thus is striving to work toward a more equitable future with directives such as reduced admission costs for those on government assistance and having conversations that acknowledge the garden\u2019s colonial and exploitive origins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re very aware, extremely aware, of the importance of gardens as places of reflection, of dialogue. Nature calms people. Nature helps people to reflect upon life and humanity. It\u2019s a great setting to do those things.\u201d<\/p>\n<cite>Richard Deverell<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After his lecture concluded, Deverell was joined on stage by Japan Institute and Portland Japanese Garden CEO, Steve Bloom, for a conversation. Bloom commended Deverell his \u201ctransformational\u201d leadership of Kew, a massive, centuries-old organization that might not otherwise change without the dedication and vision of the stewards at its helm today. Photo by Jonathan Ley.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After touching on how Kew seeks partnerships in both the botanical garden and arts sectors, Bloom discussed how the Japan Institute of Portland Japanese Garden and Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew have a shared goal of peace. Deverell noted how this pursuit will be explored further on December 6<sup>th<\/sup>, 2022, when the Japan Institute and Kew will partner together to host <a href=\"https:\/\/japanesegarden.org\/events\/peace-symposium-london\/\"><em>Peacemaking at the Intersection of Culture, Art, and Nature<\/em>, a Peace Symposium being held in London, England<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re delighted to be partnering with this big Symposium that\u2019s planned for early December in London,\u201d Deverell noted. \u201cWe\u2019re very aware, extremely aware, of the importance of gardens as places of reflection, of dialogue.
