His studies were&nbsp;abruptly&nbsp;interrupted with the&nbsp;start&nbsp;of World War II, when Ishimoto was detained at an internment camp&nbsp;in Colorado. There, he picked up the camera that eventually led him to pursue a career in photography.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the war, Ishimoto enrolled in the Institute of Design, Chicago&nbsp;(New Bauhaus), where he studied photography with Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. In 1953,&nbsp;he&nbsp;traveled back&nbsp;to Japan to photograph&nbsp;what&nbsp;would become the masterpiece of his artistic oeuvre&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;the&nbsp;Katsura&nbsp;Imperial Villa&nbsp;series.&nbsp;Through these images,&nbsp;Ishimoto&nbsp;explored the intricate and interconnected relationships between architecture, landscape, and art in Japanese aesthetics and culture.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:31% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img data-opt-id=2131345349  data-opt-src=\"https:\/\/wpmedia.japanesegarden.org\/cb:NhfT.31879\/w:auto\/h:auto\/q:mauto\/f:best\/id:83905984d0f324b0483a4f6dc6e73d9a\/https:\/\/japanesegarden.org\/yasuhiro-ishimoto-portrait.png\"  decoding=\"async\" width=\"433\" height=\"608\" src=\"data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20viewBox%3D%220%200%20100%%20100%%22%20width%3D%22100%%22%20height%3D%22100%%22%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%22100%%22%20height%3D%22100%%22%20fill%3D%22transparent%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-20812 size-full\"\/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ishimoto\u2019s influence on modern architecture, art, and&nbsp;culture&nbsp;is far-reaching.&nbsp;Here at&nbsp;Portland Japanese Garden,&nbsp;Katsura Imperia Villa served as&nbsp;architectural inspiration&nbsp;for the Cultural Village, which was completed in 2017.&nbsp;The graceful balance between the existing environment&nbsp;unique to&nbsp;the&nbsp;Pacific Northwest&nbsp;and&nbsp;formation of&nbsp;new architecture is&nbsp;considered&nbsp;an&nbsp;homage to&nbsp;Japan&#8217;s traditional philosophies around&nbsp;the&nbsp;interconnected&nbsp;worlds of nature, art, and humanity.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 43%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ishimoto was designated a Person of Cultural Merit by the Japanese Government in recognition of his accomplishments and contributions to Japanese culture. The garden has been touched by a succession of landscape architects and designers, tea masters, and poets from the ruling samurai class. While some might find \u2018concentration\u2019 misleading because these were not extermination camps, the term predates the Holocaust and is&nbsp;by definition a&nbsp;place where large numbers of people are detained or confined under armed guard. We believe that awareness of the historical import of these words, as well as care in using them, is an important way to respect the collective memory of the victims and grants us greater power to confront injustice and cultivate peace.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA concentration camp is a place where people are imprisoned, not because of the crimes they committed, but simply because of who they are. During World War II, America\u2019s concentration camps were clearly distinguishable from Nazi Germany\u2019s.
