This is the first time that the Garden\u2019s entire collection of Shimaoka\u2019s works is displayed in a single exhibition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>About Tatsuzo Shimaoka<\/h3>\n<p data-wp-editing=\"1\">Born into a family with a long lineage in the art of braiding, Shimaoka first encountered the world of <em>mingei<\/em>, or Japanese folk craft movement, at Japan Folk Craft Museum, where he was deeply captivated by the philosophy as well as utilitarian aesthetics of <em>mingei<\/em>. So galvanized by the ethos of this art form, he often visited the town of Mashiko, a region known for traditional Japanese pottery. This was where a group of <em>mingei<\/em> artists, including the internationally acclaimed Shoji Hamada (1894 &#8211; 1978), had established their kilns and studios, and Shimaoka eventually became Hamada\u2019s apprentice.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19778\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19778\" style=\"width: 345px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img data-opt-id=820603215  fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-19778\" src=\"https:\/\/wpmedia.japanesegarden.org\/cb:NhfT.31879\/w:auto\/h:auto\/q:mauto\/f:best\/id:c2201f1ef5bf7d9f2d8ddd45283dc229\/https:\/\/japanesegarden.org\/Tatsuzo-Shimaoka-web.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"345\" height=\"267\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19778\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tatsuzo Shimaoka<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In 1942, Shimaoka was drafted to the army and spent the next three years serving in Southeast Asia before returning to the town of Mashiko to his career in ceramic art. Half a century later, Shimaoka rose swiftly to international prominence, as did his pottery master Hamada, who became one of Japan&#8217;s first Living National Treasure* ceramic artists in 1955.<\/p>\n<p>Shimaoka&#8217;s signature style, known as <em>Jomon-zogan<\/em> in Japanese, combines rope-impressed decoration and the white-slip inlay technique used in the Choson Dynasty of Korea.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19777\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19777\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img data-opt-id=886173881  data-opt-src=\"https:\/\/wpmedia.japanesegarden.org\/cb:NhfT.31879\/w:auto\/h:auto\/q:mauto\/f:best\/https:\/\/japanesegarden.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/Tatsuzo-Shimaoka-combo-scaled.jpg\"  decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19777\" src=\"data:image/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20viewBox%3D%220%200%20100%%20100%%22%20width%3D%22100%%22%20height%3D%22100%%22%20xmlns%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fwww.w3.org%2F2000%2Fsvg%22%3E%3Crect%20width%3D%22100%%22%20height%3D%22100%%22%20fill%3D%22transparent%22%2F%3E%3C%2Fsvg%3E\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"239\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19777\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tatsuzo Shimaoka<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>His unique incorporation of the rope-impressed inlay was also largely informed by his upbringing, where he was surrounded by a myriad of braid art since an early age. Shimaoka&#8217;s distinct style coupled with the use of a variety of glazes enhanced the richness of his earthenware. They are designated as a \u201cLiving National Treasure\u201d by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).
